Professional overview​
 

I'm a fully qualified medical doctor with experience of working in the NHS and UK University sectors as a specialist in Public Health Medicine. I now work as a freelance medical writer, consultant and copy editor.
I  undertake freelance commissions in two main areas:
 
  • Health and human body books. I provide medical oversight including advising on structure and layout, checking text and pictures for medical accuracy and creating text. See my pages on writing and consulting.
     
  • Health information creation, writing learning modules for healthcare professionals and medical editing. I write clear, accessible and medically accurate text in everyday language or for a more technical readership. I undertake technical copy editing in all specialty areas of medicine. Medical editor for Women's Health - MIMS Learning

Positions held

During this year, I was responsible for the commissioning and editing of online learning modules for doctors on all aspects of Women's Health. I worked with a clinical advisor to decide on topics, identified suitable clinical experts, commissioned the text then edited it into the appropriate house style. This included creating interactive elements and choosing appropriate images.

I was offered this role after undertaking freelance editing and writing commissions for the team over several years.

Clinical Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant in Public Health Medicine

2010 - Aug 2013

I was the Medical Advisor to the NIHR Horizon Scanning Centre and the developmental editor of all the Centre's intelligence briefings on new and emerging medical devices and diagnostic tests.  I had a key role in developing the Centre's new website and producing copy for webpages, as well as introducing the use of Twitter as a means of dissemination of our reports. I also taught Public Health and  epidemiology to medical undergraduates and postgraduates, including creating teaching materials and writing exam questions.

2004 - 2010

​In this role I worked within various NHS organisations in the areas of commissioning, immunisation, screening, communicable disease control and healthcare strategy.  I spent a year within the Department of Health working in liaison with other organisations such as local authorities, the police force and charity groups. Much of my work involved finding and assimilating scientific evidence and preparing detailed reports with recommendations both for technical and non-expert readers.​
